First off, let us just say that we get it.
Graphic design work often demands that we spend countless hours working independently.
It’s the kind of work introverts are really comfortable with.
However, sometimes, us designers need to come out of our shells from time to time if we want to succeed.
A key part of having success as a designer is building connections.
At the BCC Design Studio, we totally understand that transitioning from being an introverted designer to building connections in the industry can feel like a daunting task.
So, here are a few tips that helped many of us navigate the world of networking as introverted graphic designers.
1️⃣ Find Your Comfort Zone
Networking doesn't have to mean large, intimidating events.
Start small by talking more to your classmates and teachers.
You can also join online communities, if having in-person connections seems scary.
Try your best to keep it natural and do what feels comfortable to you.
2️⃣ Listen and Learn
As introverts, we often excel at listening and observing.
Use this to your advantage by actively listening to others during conversations.
Not only does it show genuine interest, but it also helps you gather valuable information and learn from others' experiences.
3️⃣ Be Authentic
Don't feel pressured to adopt an extroverted persona.
Instead, embrace your introversion and let your authentic self shine through.
People appreciate sincerity, and genuine connections are often built on authenticity.
4️⃣ Prepare and Practice
Before attending networking events, workshops, or even one-on-one meetings, take some time to prepare relevant stories, talking points, and questions.
Having a few conversation starters up your sleeve can help ease anxiety and make interactions feel more natural.
Also, make sure you dress comfortably and stylishly when meeting with new people, it can boost your confidence and make an initial interaction much easier.
5️⃣ Follow Up
Building connections isn't just about making initial contact; it's about nurturing relationships over time.
Don't forget to follow up with people you've met, whether it's sending a thank-you email, connecting on LinkedIn, or scheduling a follow-up meeting.
And strive to keep in contact with people you have worked with or those you look up to.
💡Remember:
Building connections is a journey, and it's okay to take it one step at a time. Every interaction is an opportunity to grow and learn, both professionally and personally.
